Ancient Greeks used "murios" (10,000) when they wanted to describe something very large.
In French, it became the word "myriad" to specify a quantity. Or if you're not too focused on math, they will say "millions of billions."
The largest number named in ancient Greek writings is a myriad of myriads (hundred million) and is a number used by Archimedes to signify the number of grains of sand that may be contained in the universe.
This does not mean that Archimedes was mistaken about the number of grains of sand, but as a myriad was impossible to count, a myriad myriad was a representation of infinity.
The Romans also used the term "myriad" to define a number between 10 000 and infinity.
Far from here, east, Chinese, Japanese and Koreans divided their large numbers in myriad . For example, one million was a hundred myriads.
Same for the Bible and the Hebrew scriptures. The Hebrew word per 10 000 is " Revava "
they blessed Rebekah and said unto him, Thou, our s heart, may you become the mother of thousands of thousands and your offspring becomes master of all his enemies!
they blessed Rebekah, and said: O our sister, may you become of thousands of millions, and let thy seed possess the gate of his enemies! (Genesis 24:60)
Another example: They are
the myriads of Ephraim, They are the thousands of Manasseh . (Deuteronomy 33:17). In these
If these figures are there to give an impression, not because they are a specific number.
In the history of Muslim Arabs, the number 10 000 is used to indicate a very large number.
For example, during the siege of Medina (the Battle of the Ditch), the pagan Arab and Jewish tribes came together for attacking Mohammad in 627.
It is generally said that the army consisted of 10,000 men.
The use of these numbers was made to give the impression that a myriad of people attacked and that Mohammad made his victory more brilliant.
Was it really 10 000 men? How did they know that the enemy's army consisted of 10,000 men? Why not 9957? Whatever. The number 10 000 in 630 correspond to the number "millions" today. It is a parable.
Using many to exaggerate a factual number is still used today.
You will notice that Muslims today argue for example that " millions of civilians were killed by U.S. troops in Iraq .
This number is more than 20 times greater than the facts.
People talk about Wikileaks and that they were able to get their hands on documents secrets about the war in Iraq. These documents were made public 22 October 2010 and therefore we know that 66,081 civilians (000 of 109) were killed (see the different numbers advertised here).
Most of these civilians were not killed by U.S. forces.
Haaaa, those dear Muslims and hyperbole!
